1140 South Van Ness Avenue is located on a 25’ x 122’ rectangular lot on the west side of South Van Ness Avenue between 22nd and 23rd Streets. Built in 1894, 1140 South Van Ness Avenue is a 2 and one-half story over raised basement, wood frame, residential flats building designed in the Queen Anne style. The rectangular-plan building, clad in flush wood siding, is capped by a gable roof. The foundation is not visible. The primary façade faces east and includes 2 structural bays, with a projecting angled bay running full height beneath a gabled attic with window. The entrances include recessed, partially-glazed wood doors reached by steps over a garage addition. Typical fenestration consists of sliding aluminum-sash windows. Architectural details include applied cast plaster ornament, dentils, fish scale shingles, gable finial, and a decorative arched portico with columns beneath a second story corbelled balconette.
