Matthew Kavanaugh developed the 700 block of Steiner Street between 1892 and 1896, now known as San Francisco’s Postcard Row. Originally number 722 was the developer’s own home and the largest on the row. After building this house, Kavanaugh continued to build up the street, selling each of the six other homes in the group and completing the row of houses in 1896.

722 Steiner at Grove was slated for demolition in the 1970’s but survived and was restored.

4,692 square foot 5 bedroom 4.5 bath Queen Anne Victorian built in 1892. Last sold for $3.1 million in 2014 ($900K below asking). Previously sold for $65K in 1976.

Broker babble: The main floors of the home feature numerous examples of exquisite Victorian details, from the gorgeous hardwood staircase that greets you in the front entry hall to the stunning plaster frieze of the formal dining room. Everywhere you look there are delightful expressions of Victorian exuberance. Grand pocket doors, lincrusta wainscotting, plaster brackets and rosettes, substantial wood moldings and leaded glass windows create an atmosphere of grace and beauty.
