4,290 square foot 5 bedroom 4 bath Neoclassical style townhouse built in 1905. Sold for $2.5 million in 2011 ($450K under asking).

The sellers were two former Williams-Sonoma executives, Dave DeMattei and Patrick Wade who apparently lived as they worked. The interior photos reflect that very distinctive overstuffed Williams Sonoma style.

My remodel 

At the time I toured this property, I was embarking on a kitchen remodel in an 1885 Victorian. What perfect timing because I absolutely fell in love with and stole the upper shelves no cabinets concept.

Open shelving can be pretty risky business in San Francisco due to our earthquake problem, but I thought it was worth the risk. So much so that I did it again in my newest remodel, this time in a mid-century high-rise.

8,335 sq ft 7 bedroom 7 bath Neoclassical manse built in 1906. Last sold for $6.5 million in 2014. Although I couldn't find any recent interior photos, a permit check did not reveal a gut renovation. I would say, based on recent permits, that this property has been gently renovated to accommodate today's lifestyle. Currently valued at about $11.6 million.

2014 Broker Babble: Constructed circa 1906 and designed by noted neo-classical architect Julius E. Krafft, this stately and historically significant residence is situated on a premier block in the heart of Pacific Heights. The property was substantially renovated which created the lower level garage and recreation room, updated the house systems, including foundation and added an elevator.

Still the home maintains charming period details including wood paneling, wainscoting, high ceilings and crown molding. Grand scale rooms and wide hallways reflect the elegance of the era and also provide spaces for contemporary entertaining.

In Neoclassical architecture both windows and door frames feature some form of decorative detailing not in a grand way, but more tasteful and restrained.

The color of these adornments was almost invariably white.

Derived from ancient Greece and Rome, the stylized acanthus leaf ornamentation surrounding the 3rd story windows is a commonly employed motif in Neoclassical architecture.

The 2nd floor windows each feature a semicircular arch reminiscent of Roman architecture.
