A bit of history....

In 1909, Elizabeth Leslie Meyerfeld, aged nineteen, married Leon Roos of Roos Brothers Men's Clothing.

Elizabeth's father, Morris Meyerfeld, a partner in the Orpheum Theater Circuit, commissioned Bernard Maybeck to design a gift house for the couple while they vacationed in Europe, allowing the architect great freedom. The stunning result was this half-timbered, Tudor residence on a prime parcel in Presidio Heights.

At 10,000 square feet, the house is larger than it appears and is the largest residence Maybeck designed for a San Francisco client.

3233 Pacific Ave, Presidio Heights

Bernard Maybeck designed 3,706 square foot eclectic style home built in 1909. Last sold for $4.701 million in 2003.

During Maybeck’s long career he designed over 150 buildings in California, the majority of them being houses in Berkeley, but with several in San Francisco. Two of the earliest, in 1909, were in Presidio Heights - a townhouse for Samuel Goslinsky at 3233 Pacific (pictured above) and the much larger Tudor-style corner house for Leon Roos at 3500 Jackson, now San Francisco Landmark #56.

381 Magellan St, Forest Hill

Bernard Maybeck designed 3,514 square foot Arts and Crafts style Forest Hill Clubhouse built in 1919. Current estimates value the property at about $2.8 million. The property is used as a neighborhood gathering place as well as an event venue.

The Clubhouse is one of the finest examples of the Arts and Crafts style, boasting a Great Room with a soaring beamed ceiling, a charming mezzanine and beautifully detailed original woodwork, original light fixtures with mica shades, and some original furniture. After extensive renovations from April to October of 2013, the Clubhouse shines again in its original glory – but outfitted with modern-day amenities like a brand-new state-of-the art catering kitchen and ADA accessible restrooms.
