The Jewel of Russian Hill

Designed by Herman Carl Baumann

Baumann had an eclectic style, adding touches of everything from to Spanish Colonial Revival to the Churrigueresque to Zigzag Deco. One of his most famous apartment houses was the Bellaire, at 1101 Green Street, a building that he financed himself during the late 1920s, and would lead to his financial ruin in the 1930s. He invested almost everything he had into the Bellaire, a luxury apartment house, now condominiums, that recalls the Telephone Building with its setbacks and vertical emphasis.

Designed by Willis Polk (1867-1924), this stucco residence often called the "Stevenson House" was built for the widow of Robert Louis Stevenson. Originally the house was 2 instead of 4 stories at the Hyde Lombard corner and had the air of a Tudor-Baroque country manor rather than the Mediterranean Villa it is today.

Legend has it that as a tribute to the infamous author, Polk designed a richly colored stain glass window in the curvy main staircase depicting the Hispaniola, the ship prominently featured in Stevenson's "Treasure Island."

Landmarked Feusier Octagon House c. 1856, one of only two surviving octagon houses in San Francisco.

Originally 2 stories, copied from an Orson Squire Fowler illustration. Modified late in the 19th Century with the addition of third story topped by a gorgeous Mansard.

Purchased in 1875 by the Feusier family whose members continually occupied the property for the next 80 years until it was sold in 1954.

5,267 sq.ft 4/3.5 on a double 1/5 acre lot and see-through Willy Wonka-style elevator. Sold for $2.8 in 1998. Listed for $5.2 in 2012, reduced to $4.5 - it did not sell.

In 2015, the house was advertised on Craigslist for 10K per month.

2,357 square foot Colonial inspired Queen Anne Victorian duplex with views, built in 1904. The 1,491 square foot bi-level pent unit last sold for $1.5 million in 2004. Currently valued at about $2 million.

My question is how did this house survive the 1906 quake (i.e. is the build date correct?). I found the photo below which shows several houses that survived on Broadway and Vallejo Streets between Jones and Taylor. Among the survivors is the Atkinson-Escher House.

The photo obviously doesn't prove anything other than the fact that some Russian Hill homes did, in fact, survive the devastation.

The contrast of death and survival, separated a few feet apart....One side of a steep Russian Hill street lies in ruins in the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The other side, like the outlier in a Midwestern tornado, remains remarkably intact.
